A Calhoun woman is the first traffic fatality of 2006.

The 26-year-old was dead at the scene at Big Bend this morning at 3 a.m. after the car in which she was a passenger went out of control, clipped two utility poles and went over an embankment.

The victim was thrown from the auto.

Her name is being withheld until next of kin is notified.

County Coroner Ed Messenger was at the scene early this morning. The body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office.

Officials indicated the driver was Justin Boatright, in his 20s, a resident of Big Springs. He was airlifted by HealthNet from the scene to Charleston Area Medical Center, suffering from multiple injuries.

Drew Jones, reportedly about 18, appeared to be a passenger in the vehicle, declined medical treatment. Jones reportedly ran from the scene, knocking on doors and asking for help. He ended at a friends house in Big Bend.

The 2003 Cavalier was traveling east through Big Bend on State Route 5 when it went out of control, rolling over, going airborne, first clipping a telephone pole, then clipping an electric pole, and coming to rest in a driveway belonging to Jesse Jackson.

It was the second accident in the last month that landed in Jackson's driveway.

Officials described the auto as a "tangled piece of metal," indicating alcohol played a role in the accident.

Calhoun EMS dispatched ambulances to the scene with the Grantsville VFD.

Trooper 1st Class Jeff Hunt is investigating.
