SAGO MINE OWNERS REFUSE UMW REPS ACCESS - MSHA Taking ICG To Court

(01/26/2006)
The initial investigation of the Sago mine disaster hit another snag yesterday.

The International Coal Group, owner of the Sago Mine in Upshur County, is refusing to allow the Mine Safety and Health Administration to enter the mine where 12 miners died.

They do not want delegated representatives of the United Mine Workers to participate in the investigation, although the Mine Safety and Health Administration has already recognized the UMWA as legal representatives for several of the Sago miners.

Congresswoman Shelly Moore Capito said the companies refusal to allow the UMW representatives is illegal.

The NSHA went to a federal judge in Elkins Wednesday, seeking an order to grant the union access.

The mine ownership is saying the UMWA is trying to interfere with the investigation into the Sago disaster.
