Rev. Clifton W. Sams, 85 - Big Springs

Rev. Clifton W. Sams, 85, of Big Springs, West Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on January 23, 2006 after a long illness.

He was born June 1, 1920 in Parkersburg, a son of the late Lewis O. and Bertha Bailey Sams.

He served in the US Navy in the Pacific Theatre during WWII on the USS Antietem (CV36)> He worked for Trans World Airlines and retired from Union Carbide Corporation with 27 years service. He was the pastor of the Chestnut Grove Independent baptist Church for over 31 years.

He served for many years on the Chaplain Board of Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center. He and his wife were foster parents for over 200 children.

Surviving are five children, Steve Sams, James Sams, and Susan Rush all of Big Springs; Nancy Sams of Kennewick, WA and Anita Parsons of Sand Ridge; six grandchildren, Christy Justice, John Sams, Dallas Sams, Joseph Sams, Samantha Cason and Dylan Rush; 3 great grandchildren, Hailey, Easton and Sarah Sams.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eva Jean Frederick Sams; three brothers, Robert, Lewis and Lloyd Sams; 2 sisters, Kathryn Sams and Ruth Marshall.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, January 26 at Stump Funeral Home, Grantsville. Interment will be in the Mt. Zion Chapel Cemetery on Leading Creek Road near Big Springs.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
