CIRCUIT COURT CANCELED OVER RISING WATER - Little Kanawha Rises 18 Feet Monday

(01/24/2006)
Calhoun Circuit Court was canceled yesterday because Judge David Nibert was blocked by rising water. The large docket will be rescheduled.

Circuit Court is suppose to resume today with Judge Thomas Evans III.

Over two inches of rain fell in Calhoun Sunday night on already water-soaked soil, causing local flooding along Henry's Fork and several other smaller creeks around the county.

The Little Kanawha rose from 10.0 feet Sunday evening to 28.6 feet Monday evening at 7 p.m., at which time the water started dropping.

The highest flood level at Grantsville, the record, is 43.9 feet, with 36 feet considered flood stage and 34 feet "action stage".

Gilmer County dismissed schools early because of rising water and Roane County schools were closed.
