(12/13/2005)
More than $1 million in recycling grants were awarded today to communities across the state, including Calhoun County Solid Waste Authority, $40,496, Nichols Graphics (Roane Co.)$21,103, Roane County Solid Waste Authority $27,369.

The funding was provided by the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection's Rehabilitation Environment Action Plan - "The Next Generation" program.

Twenty-seven cities and county solid waste authorities, as well as private businesses, gathered in Flatwoods to receive grants and attend training yesterday.

"In the 13 years that the recycling grants have been presented, we've awarded 245 grants, totaling more than $20 million," said Jim Hill, manager of REAP's Statewide Recycling Program.

The grants are available to any county, municipality, public or private entity in West Virginia interested in planning and implementing recycling programs, related public educational programs or recycling marketing efforts.

"Over the years, there has been a 30 percent increase in the number of recycling grant applicants," Hill said.

"The goal of the program is to see the number double, an increase of 100 percent. Not enough people know about the program and what we have to offer and we want to get the word out."
