OLD-FASHIONED TENT REVIVAL OPENS - "Turning America Back To God"

(06/19/2001)
Tent revivals were customary during the first half of the 20th century in Sunny Cal, and a few have sprung up since. It was like olden days to see the worshippers congregating last evening under the large tent on the grounds of the old Calhoun High School. The revival is being held by the Victory Baptist Church.

A week-long "Turning America Back to God" tent meeting opened last night with Dr. John Powell, a former Sand Ridge native and graduate of the CHS Class of 1955. Dr. Powell said it was rewarding for him to return to his native county and carry the message. A large crowd attended the first meeting, which was opened with a prayer by Sheriff Allen Parsons and a welcome by Pastor Mike Worf. The featured music was by the Hickman Family.

The revival will continue nightly through Friday, starting at 7 p.m.
