Calhoun's Middle School Red Devils ran their record to 3-0 with a 40-14 victory over Gilmer Middle at Red Devil Stadium on Thursday evening in a game that began with an unintentional onside kick by Calhoun being recovered by the Red Devil kicker Zach Moore at the 50 yard line.

It got stranger on the first offensive play when Moore hit Jacob Haught behind the Titan secondary for what would seem to be a sure touchdown, but Haught had the ball jump out of his hands at the Gilmer 22 yard line and where it was recovered by the Titans.

Calhoun held Gilmer to a three and out on its first possession, but the Titan punt was fumbled and recovered by the Titans at their own 45 yard line.

The Devils defense forced a second three and out and took over at its own 26 yard line after the Titan punt. On the first play of the drive, its second offensive play, Zach Moore hit split end Aaron Yoak in stride at the Red Devil 45 who was off to the races for a 74 yard touchdown and a 6-0 lead.

The extra point attempt was no good when a bad snap caused a broken play that came up short; score 6-0 at the 4:22 mark of the 1st Quarter.

After the kickoff and another three and out for Gilmer, Ben Laughlin took the punt at his 45 and returned it to the Titan 30 yard line.

The Red Devils turned the ball over on a fumble on the first play at the GMS 24, where Gilmer immediately returned the favor by fumbling it back to the Red Devils on its first play with Tim Sutro recovering at the 24.

Zach Moore then skirted the left side of the Titan defense and went into the end zone standing up at the 2:22 mark of the 1st Quarter and a 12-0 Red Devil lead. The extra point kick was no good.

The ensuing kickoff left the Titans in a deep hole at its own five yard line. After gaining a yard on 1st down, the charity continued when the Titans fumbled on 2nd down where Tim Sutro again recovered for the Red Devils at the seven yard line.

After a touchdown pass, Moore to Haught, was called back for a procedure penalty, the same two hooked up on the same play from 12 yards out and the lead ran to 18-0.

The two point conversion was good with Brandon Reed running it in on an option, taking the score to 20-0 at the 1:30 mark of the 1st Quarter.

The quarter ended with Gilmer facing a 4th down at its own 25. The Titan punt was blocked, but after some confusion and a conference by the officials, Gilmer was awarded possession.

On the first play Brandon Reed stripped the ball from the Gilmer ball carrier at the GMS 15. After an incompletion on 1st down, Reed scampered the 15 yards to pay dirt on an option play at the 7:32 mark of the 2nd Quarter for a 26-0 lead. The point after was no good on an incomplete pass.

The Titans were unable to move the ball after the kickoff and the Red Devils took over at the GMS 41 yard line. A pass from Dillon Mefford to Chuckie Kendall got the ball to the Titan four yard line, and after a penalty, Christian Cottrell scored for a 32-0 Red Devil lead. The extra point was no good.

The half ended with a sack of the Titan quarterback by Red Devil defensive end, Caden Arnold.

On Calhoun's first possession of the 3rd Quarter, Zach Moore scored on a 38 yard keeper with Randy Fluharty running in the two point conversion and a 40-0 lead.

After a high snap on 4th down, Gilmer got the ball at the Devils' 20 yard line. The Titans moved the ball to the 10 yard line where the Gilmer tailback rumbled in for the score and again on the two point conversion with the score going to 40-8 Calhoun.

With Calhoun going deep into its bench, the Titans were able to get another score taking the score to 40-14. The game ended with the Red Devils taking a knee and allowing time to run out.

Calhoun travels to Ritchie Middle next Thursday for a 6:30 p.m. non conference game.
