REPUBLICAN MAYORS OPPOSED TO BUSH POLICIES

(09/16/2005)
South Charleston City Council members voted last night to adopt a resolution that calls on President Bush to withdraw American troops from Iraq.

Mayor Richie Robb, who has served the town for 30 years, says he was motivated to write the three-page resolution after watching a television program about rebuilding Iraq.

He says funds are being used to rebuild Iraq's infrastructure while his city has to scrape to obtain money for highway and bridge projects.

Robb joins Charleston mayor Danny Jones, both Republicans, in opposing the Iraqi war.

The mayors say their towns and much of West Virginia remains left-out in funding basic infrastructure that most of America has had in place.

Robb won a Bronze Star for his Army service in Vietnam and has long opposed the Iraq war.

Robb threatened to withhold his vote from Bush because of his tax cuts to the wealthiest Americans and pushing the national debt to an all-time high.

Robb's resolution says there was no evidence linking Iraq with the September 11 terrorists attacks in 2001 and no weapons of mass destruction were found after American troops entered the country.
