GSC OFFERS HAVEN FOR DISPLACED STUDENTS

(09/10/2005)
Glenville State College is opening its doors to college students displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

Students seeking refuge at Glenville State will be granted pro-rated tuition and fees, and will receive help securing financial assistance for their room and board, campus officials announced Friday.

Campus leaders are currently contacting colleges and universities in the affected areas of Louisiana and Mississippi with offers of help. These colleges include Dillard University, Loyola University and the University of New Orleans, among other institutions.

GSC officials have also posted their offer at www.amstat.org/katrinarelief, and are working with other West Virginia colleges and universities on a coordinated outreach effort.

"Just as we reach out to students in our area, we want to reach out to the students of our nation," said Glenville State President Dr. Robert Freeman.

Faculty and staff at GSC will work with displaced students to transfer their existing college credits, and will put in extra time and effort to catch them up in their classes, said Dr. Kathy Butler, GSC's vice president for academic affairs. School began in late August at GSC.

Any student who has had his or her studies interrupted by Hurricane Katrina is welcome in Glenville, Freeman said.

"We want to lend a helping hand to our neighbors to the south," Freeman added.

Glenville State College is a four-year public institution of higher education located in the hills of central West Virginia. The college currently offers more than 20 degree programs to 1,400 students. With the college's low faculty-to-student ratio and competitive tuition rates, Glenville State students receive a private school experience at a public school price.

Displaced students seeking more information on attending GSC should contact Dr. Kathy Butler at (304) 462-4100 or kathy.butler@glenville.edu
