Calhoun's OPERATION NEIGHBOR relief project to bring a little help to a Mississippi community departed last night about 9 p.m. from Grantsville.

Those making the trip are, Calhoun's three commissioners, Larry McCallister, Rick Sampson and Bob Weaver, County Clerk Richard Kirby and Jim Yoak.

They will deliver food, water and other products directly to people in Ellisville, Mississippi, a rural community, 100 miles northeast of New Orleans.

Area citizens donated a truck and van full of water, food, personal hygiene items and much more. Some even thought of needy pets and brought dog and cat food.

County Clerk Richard Kirby said $5,500 in cash donations have been delivered to his office. "It has been overwhelming," said Kirby, speaking of the generosity of area citizens.

The cash donations will be used by the multi-denominational church association to continue aid to hurricane victims in the area.

Cash donations may still be delivered to the County Clerk's office. They will be forwarded to the association.

All donations will become part of the county's annual audit.

Donations can also be mailed to Operation Neighbor, P. O. Box 239, Grantsville, 26147. Checks should be made to the Calhoun County Commission.
