CALHOUN KIDS SHOW IMPROVEMENT IN WESTEST SCORES

(08/17/2005)
Calhoun school official Greg Cartwright told school board members Monday he really is pleased with the improvements in our WESTEST scores this year.

"In slightly over half of the tested grades and subjects, Calhoun scored at or above the state in the percent that were deemed proficient, which means they scored at the mastery level or above," Cartwright said.

He said there is new strength in math scores.

"Calhoun students scored at or above the state average in six of the seven tested grades and was only one percent below the state average in the seventh."

Another method of comparison of scores compares the scores of a group of students as they progress through the grades. As an example, a comparison of last year's third grade scores and this year's fourth grade scores would be comparing scores for the same group of students.

"This shows that our students improved in almost all tested grades and subjects. In all except three grades and one subject each, our students improved their performance from last year. In one case, the students in one grade level at one school increased their percent proficient by 38%." he said.

Arnoldsburg School showed "great improvement."

"We are very pleased with the overall performance of our students and will strive to continue this pattern of improvement," Cartwright concluded.
