NICHOLS DIES FROM EXPLOSION AT WALTON HOME

(07/09/2005)
Martha Nichols of Walton has died from burns received after her house exploded in Walton last Wednesday evening.

She had been taken to University Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she was suffering from burns over 80% of her body.

Nichols had reportedly gone back into the house, or made efforts to get a two-year-old boy out of the structure.

The child was also seriously burned, and is in the Shriner's Hospital, also in Cincinnati.

He has been identified as Aaron Hartley, reportedly a nephew to Nichols.

The two-story structure was located a couple doors from the Walton Community Center.

Several Roane County Fire Departments responded to the scene about 5 p.m. Wednesday along U. S. 119. Both victims were initially taken to CAMC by HealthNet.

Community residents had been asking that Ms. Nichols and the child "be held in prayer," knowing the situation was "very serious."
