HOTLY CONTESTED RACE FOR SPENCER MAYOR TOMORROW

(06/13/2005)
Spencer's municipal election is tomorrow, with the town's $37,200 mayor's post being contested.

Ten-term incumbent Terry Williams is being challenged by real estate businesswoman Joellen Greenlee in what appears to be a hotly contested race.

Greenlee has been highly visible, actively campaigning for the position.

Williams, is known for bringing the DMV building to Spencer, which allowed a new town hall center, plus WalMart, the shopping destination of Roane and Calhoun citizens.

Greenlee says she will bring change to the town, highlighting the losses the community has experienced over the past few years, saying the town has acquired hundreds of acres of unused land and has failed to upgrade its sewage system.

Williams cites continued progress during his 28 years of "on-the-job training," asking voters to renew his "contract" to help the town, citing the Main Street improvement project.

Greenlee challenges Williams for not living in the town, and for giving "preferential treatment for a select few."

There are ten challengers for town council.
