An "Evening Gala" honoring 2005 RAZE Scholarship recipients and namesake honorees was held April 1, 2005 at the University of Charleston.

Eleven scholarships were given to graduating seniors across the state. Two state, one media and 8 RESA scholarships were awarded.

Carlene Frederick was chosen from RESA V as the namesake Honoree. The scholarship winners from RESA V were, Charity Drake-St. Mary's High School, and Kristi Ramsey of Parkersburg High School.

"Over the past years many adults have dedicated their professional and personal lives to helping teens in West Virginia fight Big Tobacco. Without their guidance and encouragement the Raze Movement would not be what it is today. We, the Manahan Group, the Department of Education, the American Lung Association and the Division of Tobacco Prevention wanted to show our appreciation by honoring them with scholarships in their honor," said Dean Lee of the WV Dept. of Education-Student Services and Health Promotion and Regional Tobacco Prevention Specialists.

Gus Nelson, RESA V Tobacco Prevention Specialist, presented Mrs. Frederick with a bouquet and said, "When it came time to decide who would be chosen from RESA V it was an easy decision. Carlene Frederick was the first person to come to mind. She has dedicated over 10 years to tobacco prevention. It is with great pleasure that we honor her tonight."

Accompanying Carlene to Charleston was her husband, Dallas and granddaughter Beth Marie Whytsell.
