CALHOUN MAN ENTERS POLICE BARRACKS WITH FORTY-FIVES - Described As "Close Call," Eleven Guns, 2,300 Rounds

(06/06/2005)
A Calhoun man engaged himself yesterday in what State Police in Wood County described as a "close call."

Forty-nine-year old Bucky Dale Arthur, whose address was given as Mt. Zion but lives at Annamoriah, walked into the State Police barracks on Rt. 47 near Parkersburg with two loaded Ruger Redhawk 45s, telling officers there was a traitor in the building.

Arthur entered the barracks shortly after noon Sunday.

He was carrying the two guns in a western-style quick draw holster.

According to those at the scene, Arthur refused to leave the station and when told to put his hands against the wall, he reportedly reached for one of the guns.

State Police said in a lucky turn of events, the gun caught on a holster rope and gave officers just enough time to tackle Arthur to the ground.

"If he was able to take the fire-arm outside of the holster, there was either two things going to happen. Either a trooper was going to get shot or he was going to get shot, maybe even both," said Trooper David Stafford.

After the struggle, police arrested Arthur on charges of attempted murder and wanton endangerment.

When police searched Arthur's car, they found 11 other hand guns and 2,300 rounds of ammunition.

Authorities could not give an explanation as to what prompted the man to enter the barracks.

Arthur's bond has been set at $100 thousand dollars, $50 thousand for each charge.

He is currently being held at the North Central Regional Jail.
