STRIKE HELD OFF AT RAVENSWOOD ALUMINUM PLANT

(06/02/2005)
Officials decided to extend the contract of a Ravenswood aluminum company while negotiations for a new one continues.

Pechiney Rolled Products LLC and members of the United Steelworkers union local 5668 reached the extension agreement Wednesday night as the current contract was expiring.

Several Calhoun and regional residents work at the plant.

Local Vice President John Tabor says either party could put an end to the extension with 48 hours notice.

A spokesman for Montreal-based Alcan, which owns the Ravenswood plant, says the contract extension gives the two sides more time to finalize a new agreement.

Both sides go back to the bargaining table today.
