Calhoun High's Honor Graduates were recognized last night at the 6th annual banquet, sponsored by Calhoun Banks, Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center and the Grantsville Lion's Club.

Glenville State College President Dr. Robert Freeman (pictured left) was the guest speaker, reminding the honor graduates that education provides more opportunity.

"Life makes many choices for us, but a degree gets your foot in the door," he said.

Dr. Freeman said he was the son of a Tennessee sharecropper, and grew up on a backwoods farm that made Grantsville look like a metro area.

"Although my parents never went beyond the 6th grade, they had great sense about getting an education. Like most parents, they wanted us to do better," said Dr. Freeman.

CM-HS principal Michael Offutt (pictured left) said "Tonight we gather to honor the best of the best. The students whom we honor this evening have reached the highest levels of academic achievement among the Class of 2005."

Offutt recognized the Honor Teachers selected by the Honor Students, for their contributions. "Just as importantly, we recognize their parents," he concluded.

Superintendent Ron Blankenship presented the special awards.

Members of the National Honor Society served the meal, prepared by the Mt. Zion UM Church.
