BECKLEY MAN SHOT, CHOKES SHOOTER - A Beckley man is recovering from a gunshot wound he received after he fought off a would-be robber who was trying to steal money the victim had just collected from video lottery machines at a bar on Charleston's West Side.

Victim 29-year-old Kenneth Howell of Beckley reportedly got control of the gun and started to choke the suspect until the cops arrived.

The victim had just emptied the lottery machines of the Sports Central Bar & Grill about 4 p.m. when police say Donald Ray Jones, 52, of Cincinnati shot him as he was putting money in his truck and getting ready to leave.

FUNERAL HOME SHOOTING - Wyoming County Prosecutor Todd Houck has been named special prosecutor in a fatal shooting that took place last month inside the Dodd-Payne-Hess funeral home in Fayetteville.

Funeral Director Larry J. Hess, 55, shot and killed his son-in-law, Jerry Thomas Chesterfield, 31.

Authorties have yet to charge Hess.

PUTNAM SHOOTERS: BULLETS AND BATS - Putnam County deputies are searching for a man they believe shot at another man during a two-vehicle chase Tuesday on U.S. 60.

The shooting left five bullet holes in one man's car, according to Sheriff Mark Smith.

The pursuit began in St. Albans just before midnight as Jonathan Mullins, 20, of St. Albans chased a vehicle driven by Phillip Jason Calfee, 20, also of St. Albans. The chase went into into Putnam County, with the men alone in their vehicles.

The chase ended when Mullins got out of his vehicle and started to beat on Calfee's black 2000 Kia with a baseball bat.

Warrants were filed against Mullins on felony wanton endangerment and destruction of property charges, according to authorities.
