ALCAN ALUMINUM WORKERS SEEKING NEW CONTRACT

(05/12/2005)
The United Steelworkers and Alcan, a Ravenswood aluminum company, are negotiating a new contract for union workers at the company's plant. The contract expires at the end of May.

Several Calhoun residents have been employed at the Ravenswood plant, even though it has changed hands over the years.

About a thousand people are employed at the plant.

The facility was formerly owned by French aluminum producer Pechiney , which Alcan acquired in 2003.

Alcan was facing a federal antitrust order to sell the Ravenswood plant, which was part of Pechiney, to make the market more competitive.

Alcan resolved the antitrust issues and took over management of the plant earlier this year.
