Firefighters taking a firefighter's course got first hand experience Saturday afternoon, responding to a fire on Country Lanes, a short distance from their training site at Calhoun Middle-High School on the Mt. Zion Ridge.

While firemen went to the scene with a pumper truck and knocked the fire down, it had rapidly spread throughout the mobile home, causing extensive damage.

Neighbors said they heard a small explosion, after which flames from a hot water heater apparently ignited a mobile home.

Lizzie Linville Stout, 71, was in the dwelling when the fire erupted. Stout was trying to find her dog when neighbors rescued her from the smoke-filled structure.

Stephanie Tallhammer said she and neighbor John Hickman took Stout across the street, where she appeared to be unharmed. She had lived on the property for at least 25 years.

"I'm goin' be fine," said Stout. "The Lord is my Master."

A number of trainees helped put the fire out, said EMS Director Josh Johnson.

Additional pumpers and tankers from the Arnoldsburg and Grantsville VFDs responded to the scene shortly after 1:30 p.m., along with Calhoun EMS.
