DON HARRIS INJURED IN WIRT COUNTY ACCIDENT

(04/26/2005)
Grantsville resident and Calhoun Board of Education member Don Harris was injured Thursday evening when a car in which he was a passenger went out of control after striking a deer.

The Subaru station wagon plunged over an embankment into a deep ravine.

Harris was taken to Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center and then to Charleston Area Medical Center for what was described as a fracture in his neck. He also suffered a severe laceration to his head.

Harris' wife, Linda, a longtime employee of Minnie Hamilton Health Care Center, was driving the vehicle. The accident happened just east of Burning Springs on State Route 5.

Linda Harris said "We tried to miss the crossing deer, and the car went into a skid. It appeared to catch on fire, and getting out of the vehicle was difficult." She was not seriously injured.

"Thank God for the good Samaritans, who came to our assistance," she said.

The vehicle was a total loss.

Harris was released from the hospital Saturday, and will continue treatment for at least ten weeks.

He is expected to make a full recovery.
