HOVAH UNDERWOOD HONORED AT MEMORIAL SERVICE

(03/29/2005)
The WV legislature paid tribute to the late Hovah Underwood yesterday morning. The former first lady suffered a heart attack last September.

Hovah Hall Underwood was a native of Calhoun County.

Governor Joe Manchin, House Speaker Bob Kiss and her husband, former Governor Cecil Underwood, took part in the memorial service honoring Mrs. Underwood's life and legacy.

Governor Underwood told the group his family is still in shock over his wife's death, but says he's thankful she didn't have to suffer.

Governor Underwood said his wife's legacy as a public servant was her love of children. During the governor's first term in office, in the 1950s, she gave birth to two of the couple's three children.

He said she spent most of her time on the quality of life of young West Virginia children.
