WVU'S DRUNK REVELERS BURN, BURN, BURN - Firemen Struck With Bottles And Cans

(03/25/2005)
The unfortunate legacy at West Virginia University of "Students Gone Wild" with every major athletic victory continues.

WVU revelers threw beer bottles and cans at Morgantown firemen who responded to at least 50 street fires after WVU beat Texas Tech 65-60 last night.

"I saw a car being turned over and set on fire in the middle of Grant Avenue." said Morgantown Fire Chief Dave Fetty.

"We were obstructed in several of the areas and some citations were issued." Says Fetty. "My fellows had a considerable problem getting hose lines down to extinguish the fire. We had a hard time keeping them back."

Lieutenant Bill Trevillian of the Morgantown Fire Department said fires were set downtown and in student residential areas - "trash, couches, one vehicle and anything else that would burn."

Morgantown Police Chief Phillip Scott told WBOY-TV that some police vehicles were damaged.

The Dominion Post said a couch was thrown off a balcony and struck one or more individuals.

The burning and destruction lasted nearly four hours after midnight, police said.

WVU is still identified as a party school and well-known for binge drinking. School officials vowed to expel the revelers.

Police did not release the number of individuals arrested, although police videotaped the action.

For years, WVU essentially dismissed the behavior saying "kids will be kids," but in recent years they have taken a harder line.

"We had a few fans who acted irresponsibly after the win," said Ken Gray, vice president of student affairs. "After the win, the spotlight should have been on the team."

WVU issued preventative statements to students regarding such behavior, after ten fires were set last week. The WVU basketball team ask students to restrain themselves and find other ways to celebrate victories.

WVU Director of Public Safety Bob Roberts, the university and the city will increase security for Saturday's regional final when the Mountaineers face Louisville.
