SCHOOL BOARD EVALUATES SUPERINTENDENT

The Calhoun County Board of Education evaluated superintendent Ron Blankenship during their Monday meeting, using a new state model adopted in 2004.

The Board entered into executive session at 8:15 p.m. to complete the evaluation.

The evaluation included three sections. Section I consisted of goals set by the Calhoun County Board and Superintendent.

Section II is the state required component and Section III is an optional component.

Each section has a rating which defines exceeding goals, meeting goals, or not meeting goals.

Based on those goals the board found Superintendent Blankenship to have met most of the goals and exceeded goals in several areas. Suggestions were given for improvement in some areas.

Greg Cartwright gave a presentation regarding improving academics. (SEE story 3/22/05).

Board member Don Harris reported that a new structure at the Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center is nearing completion, and a water use agreement was signed with the Gilmer PSD for campus.

Carlene Frederick reported on recent RESA meetings and Cynthia Dale reported on a WVU Extension Service Committee meeting.

Superintendent Ron Blankenship gave the seventh month attendance report. He also discussed Strategic Planning Committee meetings.

A Medication and Safety policy was approved.

The Graduation and Promotion-Retention Policy was continued for public comment. (See school board web site under links)

A student transfer request was granted for Samantha Cottrell (grade 10) from Calhoun County to Roane County.

There was a discussion regarding the Math Textbook Adoption Waiver.

Dorma Conley was approved for retirement effective June 9, 2005.

Reductions in Force were made regarding Kristie Ritchie and Jan Whited, described as routine for the annual RIF.

Matt Ashley was hired as a substitute teacher and Seana Miller was hired as a Homebound Instructor.

Finances approved: Invoices - $405,620.54; Supplements - $5,008.56; Transfers - $38,978.52; Financial Report - February 2005; Proposed Levy Rates 2005-2006.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for April 4 (Special) at the Arnoldsburg School, Arnoldsburg.
