Some of West Virginia's most famous citizens are recipients of the Golden Horseshoe.
Nearly 300 students listed for Calhoun will likely spur some memories, if your take some time to read them.
The award is given annually to eighth graders who master West Virginia culture and history. The program, which dates back to 1931, is the longest running of its kind in the United States.
The scholars are dubbed Knights and Ladies of the Golden Horseshoe in a pinning ceremony at the Capitol.
The state gives out Golden Horseshoe awards to eighth-graders annually. Each county has at least two winners. The exam tests student knowledge on West Virginia citizenship, civics and government, economics, geography, history and current events. This year's winner will be knighted at a ceremony at the Capitol in May.
