$2 BILLION DOLLAR CLEAN-COAL ELECTRIC PLANT SLATED FOR MASON COUNTY

(02/12/2005)
West Virginia could get one of the first full-scale clean-coal electric generating plants in America.

American Electric Power is considering a site at New Haven in Mason County.

Construction costs will be $2 billion dollars, and could bring some employment to the area.

AEP will construct at least two other such plants, likely in Ohio.

Gov. Joe Manchin said "It belongs in West Virginia. That is part of who we are, and it's something we do well."

West Virginia is the nation's second largest coal producer and currently has six AEP coal-fired power plants in the state.

The new plant would go on-line in 2010.

The one-thousand-megawatt plant would remove pollutants, such as mercury and sulfur, from coal before it's burned, a problem that exists with several of the current facilities.
