CLENDENIN BEING SUED OVER POLICE AND TOWN PROBLEMS

(02/11/2005)
The Town of Clendenin is facing what appears to be a million dollar suit against "certain present and former police officers and other town officials."

Mayor Donna Gillenwater received the notice today from Charleston attorney Mike Clifford.

The advisement says claims being considered are related to false arrest, false imprisonment, constitutional torts, coerced guilty pleas, excessive bail, excessive fines and involuntary servitude.

The proposed suit could also be based on violations of the right to privacy by illegal and non-standardized drug testing and violations of various state statutes giving rise to civil liability, and conspiracy to violate the civil rights of citizens.

Attorney Clifford says he represents several individuals who are bringing the case against the Elk River town, which has been experiencing financial distress.
