SUNKEN OHIO BARGES STILL A PROBLEM - Ohio River Level Really Down

(01/24/2005)

Belleville Locks, well-known to area fisherman, has been a hub-bub of activity since the last Ohio River flood (Photo by Bernard Taylor)

The water level on the Ohio River is down. Really down.

The latest winter storm is hampering efforts to remove four sunken coal barges that have halted traffic on a section of the Ohio River.

The barges are blocking water control gates at the Belleville Lock and Dam, about 16 miles downstream from Parkersburg. Barge traffic has come to a halt on a 42-mile section above Belleville. Gates are still jammed open.
