NEW GENEALOGY RECORDS AVAILABLE ON-LINE FOR CALHOUN-GILMER

(01/22/2005)
Searching your family tree will soon be a little easier for genealogy buffs with ancestors from a half dozen West Virginia counties, including Calhoun and Gilmer.

A searchable online database is being developed by the state Division of Culture and History, according to Calhoun historian Norma Knotts Shaffer.

It will include images of birth, marriage and death certificates from Harrison, Mineral, Pendleton, Hardy, Calhoun and Gilmer counties.

Because of privacy and identity theft concerns, the database will include only marriage and death records up to 1970, and birth records up to 1930.

Shaffer said this is an exciting wealth of records that were previously obtained by going in-person.

These counties were chosen in part because their records are pretty much intact.

The online project is expected to be completed within a few months.

Currently there are several genealogy-history sites available under LINKS on the Herald.
