ASHLEY KILLED WHEN SUB STRIKES UNDERSEA MOUNTAIN

Twenty-four-year-old Joseph Ashley was serving on the USS San Francisco when his nuclear submarine struck an undersea mountain last Friday, 350 miles from its home port in Guam.

Machinist's Mate 2nd Class Ashley was killed.

The sub was traveling 35 mph when it struck the formation.

He is the grandson of Rev. Dallas Frank Smith, a part-time minister of the Blessed Hope Baptist Church in northern Calhoun.

He is the son of Daniel and Viki Ashley.

He also has grandparents living in Roane County, Joseph and Helen Ashley, who live on Ashley Road in the Grace area near Reedy.

His body is being returned to Roane County for burial.
