GRANTSVILLE'S TOWN HALL COULD BE DEMOLISHED - Congressman Mollohan Supportive Of New Facility, Says Morris

(12/10/2004)
Grantsville's old town hall will likely be demolished sometime in 2005.

Jim Morris, representing the Town Hall Committee, told Monday evening's council meeting that he had a meeting with Congressman Alan Mollohan, who seemed to think he could obtain some funding for the project.

Mollohan, according to Morris, said, "He didn't feel the figure of $273,000 was out of line."

Mr. Mollohan felt the town needed some street improvements and advised Morris to look into a grant from the Heritage Foundation, according to the minutes.

"Mr. Morris advised that the committee was now in a position to apply for grants," since the building site can be used.

Morris distributed copies of a compaction report that was provided to an engineer hired by the town.

"The soil samples were o.k., but further testing would be done once the old building was demolished," according to the minutes.

Morris said he would see that council members got committee minutes in the future.

He said the committee is looking into several organizations for grant funding.

Council approved the Town Hall Building Committee in November, 2003. The committee said it would do volunteer work for the town, taking six months or no more than a year to complete the task.

There is about $4,600 in a fund-raising account, with $25,000 set as a goal.

The town has relocated its business and police office to the courthouse annex because of the dangerous conditions present in the town hall.
