ARRESTS PENDING IN ASSAULT ON CALHOUN DEPUTY

(11/01/2004)
Clay County authorities are expected to file charges against individuals who reportedly assaulted an off-duty Calhoun County deputy sheriff.

Deputy Ron Bandy was injured early Friday when he was reportedly summoned to assist with an altercation.

Off-duty, Bandy reported he had earlier witnessed two individuals "flare up" in a dispute, but decided he would not get involved.

The fight started in a Big Otter bar and spilled onto the highway near the I-79 interchange.

Several gunshots were heard close to the bar after one of the participates left the scene.

Bandy reported he was making a purchase at an Exxon service station about 3:30 a.m. Friday across the street from the bar, when he was summoned by an individual associated with the altercation.

Reports said Bandy was assaulted and run over by a vehicle connected with the incident.

Bandy called 911 for assistance, after which State Police from South Charleston and Calhoun County responded to the scene.

Bandy said he was familiar with at least one of the individuals involved in the altercation.

He was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center where he was treated for a broken ankle and face injury. He underwent surgery for a hand injury over the weekend. He was expected to be released from the hospital today.

State Police are handling the investigation.
