Students listen attentively as soldiers tell their stories

The Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center took time yesterday to learn about soldiers, veterans and war. They heard first person experiences from World War II, Vietnam and the Iraqi wars.

Former student Brian Shackleford served in Iraq

Vietnam vet and career center instructor Ken Townsend of Tanner, shared his experiences from that conflict and assisted 83-year-old Calhouner Jim Garretson in telling his story to the students. Garretson was a former teacher at the school and a veteran of World War II.

Garretson said "I got to the ship and after that I followed my orders," after which he went to the battlefields. Townsend said Garretson was a member of "America's greatest generation."

Former career center student Brian Shackleford, who spent time in Iraq, shared his up-front experiences.
