BRAXTON TAX CLERK ARRESTED FOR EMBEZZLEMENT - Accused Of Stealing $13,000

A former Braxton County Sheriff's tax deputy has been arrested on charges of grand larceny related to embezzlement.

Betty Katherine Hays of Gassaway was arrested Monday by the West Virginia State Police following an investigation that began last May.

Hays was a 15 year employee of Braxton County. She was relieved of her duties on July 7. After her arrest she was released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.

The complaint says that Hays "while acting as a Tax Clerk for the Braxton County Tax Department did embezzle or fraudulently convert to her own use money, bank notes and drafts of other persons, of a value of $1,000 or more, which came into her possession or placed under her care or management by virtue of her office or employment."

The State Auditor's office conduced an investigation and found a loss of money in the amount of $13,329.20.
