CHARGES NOT FILED IN SPENCER DEATH - Jason Coon Dead From Injuries

(10/14/2004)
Charges have yet to be filed in the death of a 26-year-old Spencer man.

Jason Coon reportedly died Tuesday from injuries he received in an altercation on Steele Hollow Road, a short distance from the city limits.

Authorities said he received injuries described as "blows" at the residence of Heath Crihfield about 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Family members said Coon had reportedly engaged in an altercation with Daniel Kelley, although authorities have yet to confirm his participation.

Kelley was identified as a subject who was connected in the robbery of former Spencer Mayor Fred Smith. Kelley and two other individuals broke into the Smith residence.

The Roane County Sheriff's Department confirmed that Coon stopped breathing following the incident and the Roane County Emergency Squad was summoned. He was pronounced dead at Roane General Hospital.

Coon is the son of Euell Gay and Virginia Coon of Spencer.

The body has been taken to the State Medical Examiners office.

The Roane County Sheriff's Department is continuing the investigation surrounding the incident.
