Kimberly Rush has been reading her way through a series of leveled readers to increase both her understanding of what she reads and the speed that she reads. Kimberly has read 59 books in a five week period. The series of books being utilized is based on the Reading Recovery model. The books have controlled vocabulary, but have an interesting plot (story) which encourages the student to think about what they are reading. Kimberly has shown great progress during this five week period. She likes what she is doing and plans on signing up for another five weeks.

Other students in the after-school tutoring program have also shown great progress. They read from text with controlled vocabulary orally to a tutor, complete comprehension activities with the use of manipulatives, review phonics with Zoo Phonics (K-1), and utilize the computer for letter recognition and phonemic awareness (K-1) through the Fast ForWord program. We have had a really productive learning experience this five weeks and hope to see more successes like Kimberly.
