HOVAH HALL UNDERWOOD'S MEMORIAL SET FOR MONDAY

Memorial services are set for 11 a.m. Monday in Charleston at the Christ Church United for Hovah Hall Underwood.

She died Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at CAMC General Hospital following a stroke suffered at home the previous evening. She was born April 12, 1919, in Grantsville, W.Va., the daughter of Roche C. and Docia Betts Hall, both deceased.

She earned an AB degree from Salem College and a Certificate in Social Work from West Virginia University.

She taught at Grantsville Elementary School, worked in a defense plant during World War II and served 10 years as a child welfare worker in northern West Virginia counties.

She married Cecil H. Underwood on July 25, 1948, and the couple have three children.

She was on the board of Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Cammack Children's Center, Huntington Museum of Art, Marshall University Artist Series, United Methodist Foundation and America's Promise. In addition, she was a member of United Methodist Women, Charleston Garden Club, Governor's Mansion Preservation Foundation, Daughters of American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Kanawha County Republican Women, West Virginia Republican Women, Charleston Women's Club, WV Symphony League, Hadassah of Charleston, Breast Cancer Awareness, Kids Count and American Association of Social Workers.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Cecil H. Underwood.

Also daughter, Cecilia Baker and Sharon Underwood, both of South Charleston; son, Craig Underwood of Boston; grandchildren, Christopher and Coleman Richardson of South Charleston, Mary and Quintin Baker of South Charleston and Jordan and Myles Underwood of Boston; and sisters, Wanda Abruzzino of Barberton, Ohio, Betts Donofrio of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Cecil Mae Cala of Florida.

She donated her body to Marshall University Medical School.

The family will receive visitors immediately following the service in the church social hall.
