CLAY BUSINESSWOMAN CLINGING TO LIFE - Estranged Husband Admits To Shooting

(09/14/2004)
A Clay business woman was critically shot at her residence yesterday morning.

Nancy Nelson, about 50, was discovered bleeding and dying in her bed shortly before noon and was life-flighted to Charleston Area Medical Center where she is listed in critical condition.

Authorities said she was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, including one wound to her head and another to her chest.

She was under surgery most of yesterday and is on life support.

Her estranged husband, Larry Thomas, called Kanawha County 911 yesterday afternoon and said he had shot his wife and was going to kill himself.

Police said Nelson and her husband were in the process of getting a divorce.

Thomas is also a patient in CAMC tonight, with no details available regarding his admission.

The victim is the owner of a popular eatery at Maysel known as Nancy's Restaurant.

Employees of the restaurant checked on the woman after she did not show for work. They said she had been left to die.
