McCUMBERS HITS THE TOP AGAIN - 15th Appalachian String Band Festival

(09/03/2004)
Calhoun's noted mountain music maker, Lester McCumbers of Nicut, has taken top honors at the 15th Appalachian String Band Music Festival at Camp Washington-Carver in Clifftop.

During the event, some of the nation's finest string band musicians and old-time dancers won prizes in four old-time "traditional" contests—fiddle, banjo, string band and flat-foot dance—plus one "non-traditional" string band contest.

Over the history of this festival, more than 20 foreign countries and 40 of the 50 states have been represented, with many returning year after year. This year the crowd was over 3000.

MuCumbers won first place in the the best fiddler contest ($400) and also won first place in Senior Fiddle Honors, 60 years of age and over ($200). McCumbers won in that category last year.

In the Traditional Band category, the Whoopin' Holler String Band of Orma, WV won 2nd place ($400).

(Editor's Note) The life and times of Lester McCumbers has been featured this year in Goldenseal Magazine.
