WAL-MART STATE'S BIGGEST EMPLOYER

Wal-Mart is West Virginia's No. 1 private employer.

The giant retail chain placed first on the state Bureau of Employment Program's list of the 100 largest private employers through March 2004.

It has held the spot since 1999.

No. 2 was West Virginia University Hospitals/United Health System, which includes Broaddus Hospital, Davis Memorial Hospital, United Hospital Center and WVU Hospitals.

The 2004 top 10 also include Charleston Area Medical Center; Kroger; CSX; Weirton Steel Corp. (now owned by International Steel Group of Cleveland); American Electric Power; DuPont; Verizon; and Allegheny Energy.
