GUNFIRE AND MAYHEM ON CLAY'S "MURDER MOUNTAIN"?

(08/18/2004)
Gunfire has been ringing on Clay's "Murder Mountain," according to the Clay Communicator.

The remote area between Ovapa and Grannies Creek in Roane County has developed a reputation for drug deals, shootings and mayhem.

"A command center of sorts was set up at the home of Richard White's house" by local law enforcement, which has been sparse since the Clay County Sheriff's Department has laid off their deputies.

Residents says they heard shots much of Monday evening and the Communicator is reporting "a bloody, bullet riddled Cummings subject came off the mountain and asked for help at the White home after others in the community refused to come their doors."

He was later identified as Richard Cummings.

The report could not be confirmed last night.

Additional officers are expected to be dispatched to the backwoods area today.
