A teenager and former Spencer resident is being held in jail for the murder of his cousin in Calhoun County.

Christopher Cox, 19, was arrested at his mother's home in Spencer last Thursday morning and charged in the death of 49-year-old Russell Metz of Arnoldsburg.

The suspect's mother, Chris Cox, said Metz was a cousin to her adopted son through his birth father.

Cox alerted police after her son came to her home last Wednesday night with an injury to his arm. She took him to Roane General Hospital where he received stitches. He was arrested at her home the following morning.

Police said Metz was slain at his residence, located less than a mile from the Roane County line.

Although police are still waiting on an autopsy report, Sgt. D.H. Campbell of the State Police detachment in Grantsville said Metz appeared to have been shot and stabbed several times.

"It was gruesome," said Campbell. "In 15 years it was the most brutal scene I've been in."
