MAN SHOT AND STABBED NEAR PINK ROAD - Spencer Man Being Charged

(08/05/2004)
By Bob Weaver

UPDATE - Authorities are investigating what has been reported as a murder in Calhoun County.

The Spencer Police Department advised State Police in Calhoun County about 7:20 p.m. last night that a murder "has been reported in your county."

The victim has been identified as Russell Metz.

His body was discovered in a "cabin" located close to Pink Road, a short distance off U. S. 33-119 and the Calhoun-Roane county lines.

Unconfirmed reports say that Metz had been shot and stabbed and a 19-year-old Spencer man has been charged.

The murder reportedly happened about 2 p.m. Wednesday, but authorities did not learn about the situation until later last night, reportedly receiving a tip.

The body has been sent to the State Medical Examiners Office in Charleston. Calhoun Coroner Neil Stump went to the scene.

The State Police Crime Lab has also been called to the scene.

Sgt. Darrin Campbell of the Grantsville Detachment reportedly talked with officers in Spencer and responded to the alleged crime scene with other troopers from Calhoun.

Numerous reports surfaced about the alleged murder throughout the evening, but authorities kept a tight lid on the incident.
