CALHOUN SURVIVES HIGH WIND TUESDAY NIGHT - Electric Disrupted, Trees Downed, Tents Overturned

(06/02/2004)
While thousands in West Virginia are without electric following a major electric and wind storm that crossed the region, Calhoun survived with a few problems.

Flooding has caused the National Guard to be called out in southern West Virginia.

Electric service has been disrupted in several areas in northern Calhoun today, including the Pleasant Hill and Annamoriah area. Crews are working to restore service.

The power outage was affecting water pumps, pumping water through the Pleasant Hill Public Service District.

The 65-mile-per hour winds likely downed hundreds of trees in wooded areas, but less that six were reported blocking roadways last night. Most of the trees were cleared by local residents.

The wind was more intense in areas north of Mount Zion.

Tents were lifted in the air, some turned over and others collapsed around the courthouse in Grantsville, all being prepared for the annual Wood Festival.

"A bunch of us held the Middle School boosters tent," said Irona Yeager. "The wind still lifted it in the air and pulled us up," bending the frame.

The large Petting Zoo tent erected on lower Main Street colapsed. "It didn't hurt any of our animals," said the owner. "We were grateful for all the people who came and helped us."

Courthouse employee Eddie Harris was seen trying to hold a tent down, nonetheless flying through the air with the canopy.

All have been restored, ready for the big event.
