SCHOONOVER FOUND TRAPPED UNDER ATV

(05/17/2004)
Clay County rescuers have found a former Democratic state senator who had been missing for more than a day after going out on his ATV.

Randy Schoonover was conscious and talking when volunteers found him Sunday night, pinned under his four-wheeler in Short Hollow in the southern section of Clay County.

Clay Volunteer Fire Department Chief Greg Fitzwater says Schoonover had left his home in Hartland alone between 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday to look for game.

A search began Saturday, but was called off after darkness, but a few volunteers continued to search and found Schoonover.

Schoonover was appointed to the Senate in 1993 and elected in 1994 and 1998. He represented Clay, Fayette, Greenbrier, Nicholas and Webster counties.

His legislative career ended in 1999 when he pleaded guilty to taking a $2,700 bribe. He served 14 months in prison.
