MORE WV MILITARY CALLED TO IRAQ - State Has Sent "Most Per Capita" To Fight

(05/06/2004)
With the war in Iraq still raging, the entire Parkersburg-based Charlie Company, 463rd Engineering Battalion, will be deployed to Iraq by July.

Several of the unit's members recently returned from overseas deployment, but they will likely be returning.

More than 1,000 West Virginia National Guard members are on active duty in the Middle East.

Guard spokesman Major Mike Cadle says West Virginia has sent the most soldiers, per capita, to fight the war on terrorism.

More than 1,500 have returned from a tour of duty, usually 12-14 months.

Cadle says nearly all of West Virginia's National Guard units have been called.
