COMMISSION GETS $80,000 IN HOMELAND SECURITY FUNDS - Grants And Funding Main Issues

The Calhoun Commission will receive $80,000 in Homeland Security funds, with $50,000 designated for law enforcement and $30,000 designated for the local Office of Emergency Services, Bill Stemple, Director.

Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department Director Gary Hamilton and local board member Bill Shock appeared before the commission asking for funding. The commission voted to give the agency $1,200 and look into other ways the county can give support.

A public hearing was held regarding the $4 million extension of water service to Sand Ridge, Millstone and Route 16 south. (See earlier story) It was one of several grants that are being processed by the commission, among other new applications that have been made.

Commission President Larry McCallister announced the county did not receive grant money for courthouse improvements, but indicated the commission will proceed with an application for funding an elevator.

The commission requested Tim Meeks with the Mid-Ohio Valley Regional Council to prepare a Small Cities Block Grant application to obtain an elevator for the courthouse. The application will be filed on June 9th.

Diane Ludwig of the LK Area Development Corporation advised the commission she is processing a grant application through HUD.

The commission approved the recommendations of the 911 Advisory Board for part-time employees as 911 dispatchers. Hired were Robin Hathaway, Hazel Lane and David Johnson.

Bids for the construction of an E-911 building will be opened on May 7 at 1:30 p.m.

County Clerk Richard Kirby said Sheriff Allen Parsons is developing a new set of policies for law enforcement this year, which will meet requirements for liability insurance.

Commission President Larry McCallister advised the commission that he was hopeful a grant will be obtained for the construction of an asphalt walking trail around Wayne Underwood Field. McCallister attended a meeting in Charleston to advocate for the grant, which would be added to another $7,000 grant obtained from Sisters of St. Joseph.

New members appointed to LEPC include Marlan Zwoll, Arletta Mills and Barbara Lay. Member Jerry Riggs resigned from the group.

County Clerk Richard Kirby said grants totaling $40,000 from last year's Budget Digest are now being processed for upgrading computer service in the courthouse, most of which has been mandated.

The commission will canvas the election on May 14th at 9 a.m.

Commissioners McCallister, Sampson and Weaver approved bonds, bills and wills, along with a review of the budget.
