MORE WV GRADUATES ATTENDING COLLEGE

(04/21/2004)
The number of high school graduates going to college in West Virginia has increased by three percent to about 59 percent, according to a study by the Higher Education Policy Commission.

Of the 17,971 students who graduated from high school last year, about 10,673 students enrolled in a college or university. Nearly 50 percent of those chose West Virginia institutions.

Charleston's George Washington High School led the state's individual public high school with about 100 percent of its 2003 graduates going to college. That compares to a low of about 23 percent for Harts High School in Lincoln County.

Among the state's 55 counties, Harrison County led the state with about 84 percent of its 2003 high school graduates going to college. Webster County had the lowest county rate with only 40 percent of graduates opting to attend college.
