SCHOOL BOARD HAS EFFECTIVENESS MEETING

Extracted from minutes April 1:

Michele Scott from The Education Alliance and Jeff Duffield from Columbia Gas Transmission presented Dan Cosgrove with a mini-grant for his classroom along with a certificate and a glass apple paperweight.

This was a school board effectiveness meeting.

Kelley Houchin, Local School Improvement Council member, reviewed West Virginia Report Card data, showing student achievement data along with improvement data.

Vickie Baker and Tammy Yoak discussed project MERIT and Linda Jarvis discussed the MERIT software used at Calhoun Middle/High School.

Sharon Pitts, Faculty Senate Chair, discussed involvement in the development of the Unified School Improvement Plan in the areas attendance, tutoring, content objectives and scheduling.

Dr. Loralyn Hilton-Taylor discussed Project GLOBE.

Sandy Rentschler reviewed the middle/high school's enrichment programs.

Karen Kirby discussed the individual student response technology utilized at the school.

Zachary Houchin, student representative, did a PowerPoint presentation which was a year in review of the outstanding athletic accomplishments of the middle/high school student body. Zach also thanked the Board of Education for allowing the student body to attend the state basketball tournament in Charleston.

The board conducted the following business:

Out of State Conference Requests - Renita Benson and Jackie Shimer - National Reading Association Conference - Reno, Nevada - May 2-6, 2004

Out of State Transportation Request - Calhoun-Gilmer Career Center - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - April 23, 2004

The next meeting is April 20.

Vice-president Carlene Frederick conducted the meeting in absence of Rick Fitzwater. Members Cunningham, Harris and Simers present.
