WEST VIRGINIA'S BUDGET IS SHAKY - Deficits Projected Next Year

(03/26/2004)
The 2004-05 state budget passed last weekend by the Legislature threatens to increase the following year's deficit by at least $50 million.

The state's deficit is already projected at $175 million.

The state does not allow counties to operate with a deficit.

Lawmakers drew from several pots of one-time funding this year to keep the state operating.

These sources won't likely be available when the 2005-2006 budget is drawn.

Wise has until Friday to use the line-item veto, which he has used to whittle down past budgets.
